Day 1 – Arrival in Abu Simbel

Today, you’ll travel south from Aswan to one of Egypt’s most spectacular sights: the legendary temples of Abu Simbel. The drive takes around three hours through desert landscapes towards the shores of Lake Nasser, with the option to stop along the way whenever you’d like. Nothing quite prepares you for your first glimpse of Abu Simbel. Carved directly into the rock, the entrance is guarded by four huge statues of Pharaoh Ramses II, built to impress visitors and showcase his power more than 3,000 years ago – and they still do exactly that today. Similar to Philae Temple, Abu Simbel was part of an extraordinary UNESCO rescue project and careful relocated stone by stone to save it from the rising waters caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

Most visitors come on a day trip from Aswan and have to leave again in the afternoon, but you’ll get the chance to experience Abu Simbel as the crowds start to disappear. It’s a much quieter, calmer experience that gives you time and space to relax and really take in the scale and beauty of the site.

Together with your guide, you’ll explore the temple complex and uncover the stories behind its fascinating history and intricate carvings. As you stand inside the ancient chambers, surrounded by towering statues and detailed hieroglyphics, you’ll feel as if you have stepped back in time. At the end of the day, you’ll head to your lodge near Abu Simbel, where you can relax and soak up the peaceful surroundings.

After breakfast you’ll be collected for your journey back to Aswan. If you’re looking to spend some time on the water, we can arrange a Nile cruise that takes you from Aswan to Luxor.
