Egypt Travel Guide

Egypt has something for everyone. It’s a country filled with ancient history, where towering pyramids, grand temples and hidden tombs tell stories thousands of years old. Wander through lively souks and bustling cities, sail along the Nile on a traditional felucca or discover quieter corners shaped by desert landscapes and palm-lined riverbanks. When it’s time to slow down, the Red Sea offers golden beaches, colourful coral reefs and warm waters perfect for snorkelling or diving. Add flavour-packed food, warm hospitality and an incredible sense of history, and you have a destination full of contrasts and unforgettable experiences.

Why travel to Egypt?

For many people, Egypt is a dream destination, and for good reason. The country is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary historical sites, from the pyramids of Giza to the grand temples of Luxor and Abu Simbel. But what often surprises people most is the contrast. Egypt can feel busy, chaotic and energetic in places, then suddenly peaceful as you drift along the Nile or watch sunset over the desert.

You’ll discover:

World-famous ancient wonders like the pyramids, the Valley of the Kings and vast temple complexes

Life along the Nile, with palm-lined riverbanks, traditional feluccas and beautiful scenery

Bustling cities and markets, packed with flavours, colours and local life

Golden beaches and coral reefs along the Red Sea for snorkelling and diving

Warm hospitality and flavour-packed food, from fresh mezze to grilled meats and sweet pastries

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

Egypt is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is usually between October and April, when temperatures are cooler and sightseeing is more comfortable. Spring and autumn are ideal for combining culture and beach time, while winter brings pleasantly warm days and cooler evenings. Summer can be very hot, particularly in Upper Egypt around Luxor and Aswan, though it’s a great time for Red Sea stays.

Food & drink in Egypt

Egyptian food is fresh, comforting and full of flavour. Expect mezze-style dishes, grilled meats, fresh bread and plenty of vegetarian options too. Try local favourites like koshari (Egypt’s famous street-food mix of rice, lentils and pasta that is completely vegan too), falafel, shawarma and sweet pastries dripping with honey. And of course, no trip is complete without a fresh mint tea overlooking the Nile.

Is Egypt good for families?

Yes, especially for families with curious children or teenagers interested in history and adventure. Climbing inside pyramids, spotting hieroglyphics, sailing feluccas and snorkelling in the Red Sea all make Egypt feel like one giant outdoor classroom (but far more fun).

Our tips for travelling with kids in Egypt:

Don’t rush from sight to sight – slower journeys along the Nile or Red Sea are part of the experience

Travel with local guides to bring Egypt’s history to life

Combine culture with downtime for a more balanced trip

Pack layers in the winter, as the mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool
