Heaven for nature lovers and a complete change of scenery after meddling Medellin, Rio Claro is well known to Colombian families who flock here for the weekend of fun and outdoorsy activities. Not so much on the international tourists radar yet, it's a peaceful spot with the stunning canyon, clear blue river and the jungle as a backdrop.

Cali might not be the most architecturally splendid city in Colombia, but the vibe and the atmosphere is what lures most people in. A perfect place to unwind and a twitchers' paradise this little corner of serenity is not to be missed. Hike through coffee plantations, learn about indigenous communities in the area and let the nature take over.

Travel to Neiva to visit the breath-taking Tatacoa desert (a dry tropical rainforest!). Off the typical tourist trail, Tatacoa is relatively undiscovered, and is definitely worth a visit. With sand and rock formations coloured in all shades of red, it offer fascinating views and great hiking trails, so lace up your boots and get exploring!
