Best time to visit Colombia

General information

Colourful streets of Colombia

Colombia is a great destination to visit all year round. Temperatures across the country never drop lower than 15 degrees and generally don’t exceed 35 degrees due to its location near the equator. Typically, December to March and July to August are considered to be the best times of year to visit.

Across Colombia you will find different types of climates thanks to the many geographical regions and vast size. The country has a tropical rainforest, savannas, deserts and mountains so the climate can vary enormously when you travel from one point to another in just a few hours.

Wet season

In principle the wet season runs from April to November, with the exception of July and August. You can expect the most rain in the months of April, May, October and November, mainly on the west coast and in the Amazon region. It is a lot drier on the Caribbean coast in the northeast. Travel is certainly still an option during the wet season with some careful planning and preparation.

Weather by region

The best time to travel to northern Colombia is from December to April. The north, mainly in the east along the Pacific Ocean, is the driest area of Colombia and therefore generally does not receive much rainfall.

Central Colombia is actually not very wet all year round, but it is best to avoid the rain from December to March and from June to August. In the other months it is less dry, but even then there is not much rain.

The best travel time for the south of Colombia, around the Amazon region, is in the summer months. However, there is also a lot of rain in these months. It is good to take into account that flooding can happen every now and then.

Do you still want to be sure that there is no shower and that it is not too chilly? Then it is best to travel in the summer or winter. The temperatures are then pleasant and there is generally little rain. You can expect the most rain in the months of April, May, October and November. This mainly falls on the west coast and around the Amazon region. It is a lot drier on the Caribbean coast in the northeast.
