Popayan, one of the best preserved colonial cities in South America, is well worth your time. Home to 17 Colombian presidents and one of the best universities in the country, it will meet you with open arms and immediately steal your heart. You can endlessly wonder down its cobbled streets and marvel at the white-painted baroque facades the city is so famous for. But what will make your time here even more special, is a visit to a traditional Colombian market, and a hearty meal with a local family.

Day 1 - Arrival in Popayan

Today you'll hop on a bus (travel like a local!) and head over to the whitewashed colonial town of Popayan. The 6 hours drive is scenic and you could get a glimpse of the mighty mountain peaks if the weather is favourable. Your hotel is right in the heart of the old town, a short taxi ride away from the bus stop, so you'll get settled in in no time and have a few hours to relax and explore the city. Built in colonial style, with cosy plazas and beautiful churches, atmospheric Popayan is a great place for an evening stroll.

Day 2 - Exploring local markets

Today with your guide you will explore the heart of Popayan - its famous markets. From locally grown produce to traditional medicine, there's plenty to see. Add colours, traditional clothing and tasty snacks that you'll try along the way, and you'll be fully immersed into the local way of life. To make your experience even more special, you'll then have your lunch with a local family. Hearty home-made traditional meal and a warm welcome from the locals is exactly what you'll need after a few hours of chaos and excitement. The rest of the day is free for you to do as you please.
