Explore the Emerald Valleys of Ella
Bite-sized trip
Day 1 – Arrival in Ella
Ella is a popular small town nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country, with plenty of places to eat and a buzzy, welcoming atmosphere. All around Ella you’ll find tea plantations, temples, waterfalls and green hills.
Your trip to Ella will begin with a scenic train ride from Nuwara Eliya through rolling, green countryside. This train journey is known among travellers as one of the most beautiful in Sri Lanka, so it’s well worth giving up your private car and driver for this part of your trip. We’ll buy you a 2nd class ticket so you’re travelling with the local people. Seats are not guaranteed and it’s a popular journey so you may have to stand. But it’s a great way to meet local people and enjoy the spectacular landscape around you. You’ll ride past impressive mountains and spectacular gorges. When you arrive at Ella station, you’ll see your driver giving you a wave on the platform to take you to your hotel.
We can also offer two shorter train rides from Ella: you could travel 1 hour to Badulla, passing over the Nine Arch Bridge, or travel 50 minutes to Haputale with a view of the Ravana Waterfall. These shorter train rides are quieter. Your Travel Specialist can talk you through the options.
Day 2 – Trekking
This morning you’ll wake up to the endless mountain views that surround you. Lace up your boots; it’s time for some hard work as you set off on a trek to Little Adam’s Peak! Armed with a map of the routes and a packed lunch that we’ll provide, you’ll begin your brisk walk for about two hours through tea plantations, beautiful train bridges and remote villages.
Once you’ve climbed the large steps to the summit, you can put your feet up at the top as you look out over the gigantic ridges. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous today, you could climb Ella Rock instead. This is a more challenging trek where you’ll walk for about 4 hours through winding jungle trails to reach the top.

Trek along the Pekoe Trail
If you’re a keen walker or just want to follow a lesser-known walking trail, the Pekoe Trail may be of interest. It’s a 300km network of walking routes through the tea country and highlands, split into 22 day treks of varying difficulty. It’s a chance to explore lesser-visited places at a slower pace, connect with local life and see a more authentic side of Sri Lanka—without the crowds. For more information, check out our Pekoe Trail bite-sized trip.
Day 3 – Depart Ella
Take in the breathtaking views of Ella one last time, then head onwards with your driver to your next destination. Swap the hills for the beach and head to the golden sands of Arugam Bay, or spot the illusive leopard in Sri Lanka’s famous Yala National Park
