Furano boasts some of Hokkaido’s most beautiful scenery and invites you to explore the region your own way. Discover the diversity of Central Hokkaido at your own pace, taking in colorful flower fields, the photogenic Blue Pond, and spectacular natural landscapes. Looking for even more adventure? We’d be happy to arrange rafting on the Sorachi River for you.

Day 1 – Onward to Furano

Travel time: approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on your starting point

Today, you’ll continue your journey to Furano, a region in the heart of Hokkaido surrounded by mountains and known for its peaceful, rural atmosphere. We recommend taking a detour off the main road now and then. It may slow you down a little, but the smaller roads will reward you with beautiful scenery.

Although Furano is best known as a ski resort in winter, nature takes centre stage here for the rest of the year. This pleasant base is ideal for exploring the lush surroundings, with scenic viewpoints, walking trails and expansive fields. Visit the Rokugo observation deck for sweeping views, or take the Furano cable car up into the mountains. You'll stay in a comfortable mid-range hotel in central Furano.

Day 2 – Through picture-postcard landscapes toward Daisetsuzan

Today you’ll continue on to Sounkyo Onsen. The drive takes around two hours, but there’s enough to see between Furano and Biei to turn it into a leisurely day out. This region is known for its vast flower fields, which bloom from spring through late summer, creating colourful landscapes.

Stop, for example, at Shikisai no Oka, where rolling flower fields stretch out against the backdrop of Hokkaido’s mountains. Depending on the season, you’ll see tulips, poppies, sunflowers and many other flowers in bloom. Then continue along the famous Patchwork Road, a route through gently rolling farmland, with ever-changing views of Hokkaido’s countryside along the way.

A stop at the Blue Pond near Biei is also worthwhile. Depending on the light, the water’s intense blue color can be particularly striking. Nearby, you’ll find a waterfall where the water cascades picturesquely down pale rocks. With so many little stops and impressive views along the way, this day of travel soon becomes an experience in its own right.

Good to know: want to explore the region in more depth? We’d be happy to arrange an extra night in Furano for you. Just let us know.
