This jungle adventure is one of our most popular Malaysia trips, and it's easy to see why. Covering more than 4,000 km², Taman Negara National Park is home to one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests, estimated at around 130 million years old. That makes it older than both the Amazon and the Congo. You'll follow trails through ancient jungle, take a night walk to spot the wildlife and insects that come alive after dark, and sleep in a wooden bungalow on the edge of the park.

Taman Negara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Malaysia. Early booking is highly recommended.

Day 1 - Travel to Taman Negara & explore at night

You'll arrive in Kuala Tahan, on the edge of Taman Negara National Park, home to one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests. Most travellers arrive from Kuala Lumpur, a journey of around 4–5 hours by road. From here, a short crossing by local boat takes you to your accommodation. It's the perfect introduction to the jungle. Your base is a simple, nature-focused property just outside Kuala Tahan, with comfortable air-conditioned rooms, a restaurant and a café.

Once you've settled in, you'll head into the jungle at dusk for a guided night walk. Surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest, you'll search for the wildlife and insects that come alive after dark.

    Days 2 & 3 - Explore the rainforest & departure

The next morning, you'll head into the ancient rainforest with an experienced local guide, following a 3.5-kilometre trail from the lodge up to Teresek Hill. The climb is manageable, and there are plenty of chances to spot birds and other wildlife along the way. From the top, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views across the jungle canopy towards Gunung Tahan, the highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia. Afterwards, you'll make your way back down and return to the lodge by boat for your final night.

You'll also have time during your stay to visit the Canopy Walkway, recently reopened, for a bird's-eye view of the rainforest from up to 45 metres above the forest floor. Tickets can only be bought locally on the day. Your final day is free to relax or explore a little more before you leave.

Taman Negara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Malaysia, attracting visitors from across the world. If you would prefer a less touristic, rainforest adventure check out our Endau Rompin trip.

    Stay longer in Taman Negara

    • Price:
From £264 per person (excluding flights)
    • Included:
Accommodation, transport and meals as described above with additional boat trip

If you'd like more time in Taman Negara, we can arrange a third night. On your extra day, you'll head up the Tahan River by boat with a nature guide, who will point out wildlife along the banks. Depending on the season, the river can run shallow, so be prepared to hop out and give the boat the odd push. You'll stop at a sandbank and walk a short way to a rocky stretch of river where you can cool off with a swim. Afterwards, you'll drift back downstream to Kuala Tahan for one last night in the rainforest.
