The valleys of Bhutan, in particular the Phobjikha Valley, are just as magical and mysterious as the views of the Himalayas. In spring and winter you can see the rare black-necked cranes that fly from Tibet. You'll stay in a charming mid-range hotel on the edge of the valley. As the morning mist slowly rolls away and the rising sun sparkles off the morning droplets of dew, you'll get the feeling of being somewhere truly special.

Day 1 – Arrival in the Phobjikha Valley

To begin this trip you’ll be driven to Gangtey, a small town situated on the edge of the Black Mountains. Here you’ll visit Gangtey Goemba, one of the most important Nyingma monasteries in Bhutan. It was founded in the 17th century and remains an active religious centre where monks live and study. Inside, richly painted halls and intricate woodwork reflect Bhutan’s deep Buddhist traditions. From the courtyard you have wide views across the valley, known for its wetlands and traditional farmhouses. After visiting the Goemba you’ll travel down into the wide, green Phobjikha Valley. The valley is known for the rare black-necked cranes that winter here.

According to many, this is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Himalayas, and we agree. While here you can visit The Crane Centre for information about the black-necked cranes that winter here from November to February. It’s also a great starting point for hikes in the valley and after your own walk through the rolling scenery your driver will take you to your hotel. It has sweeping views of Phobjikha Valley and is built in typical Bhutanese style with pastel colours, wood carvings and a cosy log burner in the restaurant.

    Optional spiritual experiences

During your stay in the Phobjikha Valley we can arrange a special spiritual experience at Gangtey Monastery (at a supplement). You may join monks during morning or evening prayers, listen to rhythmic chanting in the prayer hall, or take part in a short meditation session guided by a resident master. There may also be the opportunity to receive a traditional Tshewang blessing ceremony led by a senior lama, where butter lamps are lit and blessings are offered for health and wellbeing. It’s a rare opportunity and respectful glimpse into Bhutan’s living Buddhist traditions. If this sounds of interest, ask your Travel Specialist for more information.

Day 2 – Departure from the Phobjikha Valley

This morning you’ll depart the valley and continue on your Bhutanese journey. Depending on where you are heading, you could spend a few hours walking through the parts of the valley you missed yesterday. If you would like to spend an additional night in Gangtey, ask your Travel Specialist to add another night onto your travel plan.
