Be inspired by Portugal

Oh Portugal, where do we start when explaining this eclectic country, full of sandy beaches and surf spots, historic cobbled cities and some of the friendliest people we have met on our travels. Long in the shadow of their European neighbours, Portugal has risen to a must-visit destination and rightly so. With so much to pack into a holiday to Portugal, we have broken down all the reasons to love this place below to help you decide what to include.

Top things to do on a holiday to Portugal

Beaches

With a long coastline flanked by the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal’s beaches are often described as rugged and wild. There are some excellent surf spots, some perfect for beginners and some more suited to the experienced, but it’s not just the thrill seekers who are catered for here. Mainland Portugal and the island of Madeira boast sandy stretches, as far as the eye can see, for a day by the sea in-between sightseeing.

The Algarve boasts yet more beaches, less surf and calmer water perfect for families and couples looking for a beach day and seafood dinners by the sea.

History & Culture

Step back in time with a visit to Portugal’s past. Colourful palaces are dotted throughout the landscape in Sintra, a short train ride from Lisbon. Offering a glimpse into the country’s Royal past, the National Palace of Pena – the summer residence of the former Royal family – is open to tourists to learn more about its significance in Portuguese history.

Portugal’s cities of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra are brimming with historic monuments, castles and signs of ancient trade routes – take a wander through the cobbled streets and soak up the history around you.

The Great Outdoors

Portugal’s rugged coastline is complemented by it’s vast countryside and inland villages, home to cork trees in Alentejo, the lush vineyards of the Douro Valley and activities such as mountain biking.

One of our favourite experiences in the Portuguese countryside is camping amongst nature with the river flowing gently nearby. Getting back to basics (well it’s glamping afterall so plenty of comfort still to be had!) is the perfect addition to a holiday to Portugal, where you can wake up with the sun and slowly kayak upriver.

Island Life

Less than 2 hours by flight from Lisbon, the island of Madeira is known as the land of eternal spring. Pleasant temperatures year round make this a great spot to visit in the winter months and picturesque hiking can be done especially in spring and autumn. Throw in fantastic beaches, great surf and beautiful scenery and you can see why the island is a major hotspot for visitors.

You can combine Madeira easily with our Mainland Portugal trips to experience both areas in one holiday.

Best time to visit Portugal

A year round destination, Portugal has a mild climate and activities which can be enjoyed in all months. We think the best time to visit is spring and autumn to avoid the increased rain of the winter and the scorching temperatures of the summer but really you can’t go wrong if you know what to expect!

Families can enjoy sunny beach days in the summer school holidays in the Algarve and al fresco dining is possible for most of the year.
