Mexico tacos

In search of Mexico’s best tacos…

Blog

You can’t visit Mexico without trying their most famous street food staple – tacos! Round tortillas, traditionally made from corn, and topped with a variety of seasoned BBQ or slow-cooked meats, grilled fish or even local delicacies such as cactus, and finished with locally made creamy Queso (cheese!). Our very own Hannah shares her favourite taco toppings and top spots to try them during your Mexican holiday.

Al Pastor Tacos

Arguably Mexico’s favourite type of taco is the Al Pastor style. Boneless pork shoulder, cooked on a rotating spit, and topped with coriander and the best bit, pineapple. Add some hot sauce (but be warned, they are mostly homemade and the spice level varies!) – it is the perfect savoury, sweet and spicy bite to eat.

There is no better place to try them than while exploring during our Colours and Cultures of Mexico City trip where you can dive straight into the heart of Mexican culture. I recommend visiting the lively street food markets in Zona Rosa for this local favourite and a cold cerveza.

Fish Tacos

Fish features prominently in the Mexican diet, especially along the coast, where they rival Peru for some of the freshest ceviche. However, fish tacos are not to be missed. Grilled or fried Tilapia, a common white fish is mostly used, as well as lots of prawns, and heaps of Pico de Gallo salsa – these tacos are fresh and bursting with zingy fresh flavours.

There is nothing more rewarding after a sunrise kayak when visiting the Lagoon of Seven Colours than to head to ‘Mr Tacos’ for the best fish tacos in town, or maybe even the whole of the Yucatan coast!

Birria Tacos

Now I dream about these tacos so much that I often think about booking a flight back to Mexico just for another taste. They cook these tacos on the grill and fill them with slow-cooked beef and melted cheese. Then they smother them in the sauce from the beef (sometimes they even serve a pot with it for dunking) – delicious!

They are so addictive and I found the best ones of my whole trip at the street food vendors in the main square in Holbox where they cost less than a £1 for 3. They are the perfect late afternoon lunch, after returning from the three islands boat trip during our Hangout on Holbox trip.

Fancy something a little more upmarket and special? Head to ‘Entremar’ restaurant in Mexico City for their Tuna Tartare tacos. Be warned, you will need to book ahead and rightly so, the food is top notch and the service is fantastic, making it the perfect place to unwind after a busy day exploring.

I pretty much ended up living off tacos for lunch and dinner every day and never got bored. The best ones can usually be found from street vendors, or slightly dubious-looking hole-in-the-wall eateries – you’ll know the good ones as you’ll see a stream of locals queuing up around lunchtime. Enjoy!
