Day 1 – Cairo to El Fayoum desert

After a few days soaking up Cairo and ticking off the pyramids, it’s time to switch gears and head out for a bit of adventure, with an early pick up by your desert crew in a sturdy 4×4, driver at the wheel and your guide alongside. Leaving the city behind, you’ll spot that familiar Egyptian contrast of ancient pyramids rising from the sand against a backdrop of spreading modern housing, before the bustle quickly fades and the landscape softens into greener, calmer surroundings as you approach the El Fayoum oasis. Your first stop is Qsar El Sagha, once known for its basalt and gold quarries, where you can wander through the quiet remains of an ancient temple and, if luck happens to be on your side, perhaps even come across a gold coin from centuries past.

With relaxed Arabic music playing in the background, you continue deeper into the desert, where the landscape feels almost lunar, shaped by striking rock formations and sculpted sand, with something new beyond every ridge. Along the way, you stop at a local village, visit one of the waterfalls at Wadi El Rayan, and enjoy a coffee overlooking a peaceful oasis before heading on to one of Egypt’s best kept secrets, Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales. Once a prehistoric seabed, it is now scattered with ancient whale skeletons and fossils, offering a glimpse into a distant past, before a final stop at an azure lake where flamingos gather. By sunset, you arrive at your Bedouin camp, where you are welcomed with a traditional meal and sweet Egyptian tea, followed by an evening around the campfire sharing stories and experiences, before settling in for the night under a clear, starry sky, either in a tent or a traditional Bedouin hut.

Day 2 – Depart El Fayoum desert for Cairo

The next morning, you wake to the first rays of sunshine. Take a stroll just outside the camp to capture the desert at its most beautiful in the early light. After a traditional breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the camp and your Bedouin hosts before setting off on the two and a half hour drive back to Cairo by jeep.

On arrival, you will be dropped off at the airport or your hotel, depending on your onward plans, whether that is travelling to Luxor for its temples and the Valley of the Kings, heading to Aswan for its Nubian culture and relaxed atmosphere, or simply unwinding by the Red Sea, with the option of a day room in Cairo if you are taking the night train and would like somewhere to freshen up beforehand.
