Itilo is a picture perfect, green and mountainous landscape, framed with sandy beaches and a rocky coast. This hinterland is punctured with tall, characteristic tower houses that are unique to the area. Made of natural stone, they contrast perfectly with the deep blue of the surrounding bays. This is the lesser visited southern part of the Peloponnese, where you can even hike to Cape Tenaro, the southernmost point of mainland Greece.

Arrival in Itilo

Arrive in Itilo, a small fishing located in the Peloponnese, in a deep blue bay and in an area that is close to its medieval past with many stone tower houses, Byzantine monuments and famous fortresses. You’ll check into your hotel that is built from the same natural stone as the towers. It is within walking distance to a natural pebble beach, so take a dip and enjoy a drink under the green canopy in a seaside tavern.

The famous caves of Diros are about a 15-minute drive away. These beautiful stalactite caves are a great place to cool off, whether you rent a boat and sail through them or take the walking path. One of the most famous tower villages is Vathia with its characteristic tower houses that have several floors and the front door on the 2nd or 3rd floor, accessed by a ladder. This is how the enemy was kept out in ancient times.

Hiking to Cape Tenaro

After an early breakfast, you’ll drive an hour away to the start of the hiking trail to the lighthouse on Cape Tenaro, the southernmost tip of the Peloponnese. Here you will find the remains of the ancient temple of Poseidon, Roman baths and the cave of Hades, the god of the underworld. It is only about two kilometers in each direction, and we’ll have a prepared a route for you in an app. At the lighthouse you’ll have the perfect lookout over the blue sea and the surrounding rugged mountains.

Departure from Itilo

Having spent the past few days exploring the area, you’ll leave Itilo with many options of where to go next; more beaches lie towards to the bay of Gialova or for the mountains drive to Dimitsana; a picturesque village, with traditional houses, narrow alleys and stone lodges. Alternatively, continue to Nafplio, an ancient royal city with atmospherically lit squares, a fortress in the bay and close to the classical amphitheater of Epidaurus.
