Mountains & Monasteries
4-Day Ancient Amorgos Experience - Greece
Overview
Amorgos is a place that time seems to have forgotten. A traditional piece of Greek beauty with its mills standing proudly on the hillside and snow-white monasteries against the mountainside. The inhabitants of the island still use donkeys as their main means of transport, as they stroll through the rugged interior and settle down at a seaside taverna. For more adventure, walk along high cliffs to snow-white monasteries or go snorkelling spotting octopuses and barracudas.

Arrival at authentic Amorgos
You’ll arrive to the island by ferry and will know that you’re close when the white houses built into the looming hills come into sight. You will sleep in a characteristic Cyclades hotel in a traditional village close to a narrow beach and traditional tavernas. This rugged volcanic island is relatively small with the villages, beaches and famous monasteries clinging to the rock face all a short bus ride away. Take the evening to explore the amazing restaurants in the village.

Exploring Amorgos
The next few days are free for you to explore the island at your own pace. Put on your hiking boots and walk into the mountainous interior, passing olive groves on your way to deserted villages and hidden monasteries. For the more adventurous, there is a spectacular 9.5k loop, which takes you high above the cliffs for unforgettable views. Or go by bus from Aegiali to the capital, Chora, with atmospheric streets, old windmills, local life and traditional tavernas. The Byzantine monastery of Chozoviotissa from the 2nd century can also be reached by bus and well worth the journey.

Departure from Amorgos
After breakfast and a last dip in the pool, it’s time to get back on the ferry either back to Athens or continue your island-hopping tour with Naxos or Santorini, where you can also fly home from.

Amorgos – Donkey walk
Amorgos is one of the most mountainous islands of the Cyclades and is therefore ideal for tours that lead you to impressive and expansive views. In the afternoon today, when the weather is less warm, you will be picked up from your accommodation and transferred to the village square, where you will meet the donkeys and their friendly owner who will accompany you during the tour. From the village you’ll stroll through the narrow streets and go up a narrow path to an old church. Enjoy the gentle pace at which you move with the peaceful silence around you and witness a sunset that turns the mountains red. After a couple of hours you will head back to the village and say goodbye to your new friend.

There’s so much life to find here, so keeps your eyes peeled for octopuses, barracudas, eels, shrimp, coral and more. After a few hours, you’ll hop back on the boat and head back to land.
