Meander through the UNESCO World Heritage temple and Yungang cave complex near to Datong - a great way to learn about the cultural history of northern China's Shanxi province. You'll walk through the temple structures and caves in the morning, soaking up the serene and tranquil atmosphere. It is quite incredible to wonder at the creation and preservation of these Buddhist structures built on the 5th century. You'll spend two nights in the city of Datong to make sure you get to see the complex at its best in the morning. Although the city is very business focused these days, the old city walls are under re-construction and if you have time the Hengshan Temples located are definitely worth a visit.

Yungang Grottoes and departure

Today your driver and guide will take you out to the Yungang Grottoes, one of China’s best known sites of Buddhist sculpture. Here you’ll buy your ticket and meander through the temples and sculptures with your guide. Some parts of the site are over 1000 years old! Afterwards, you’ll be driven back to your hotel in time for lunch. Perhaps ask your guide for tips on local restaurants to eat.
