Stroll through ancient streets in the lively capital of Madeira, Funchal, taking in the Portuguese atmosphere but with a laid-back island twist and getting to know its local gastronomy.
Madeira is known as a walking mecca. This volcanic island offers dizzying cliffs on the coast and alluring peaks for all abilities inland.
Porto Santo’s golden sandy beaches, pointed cone mountains, mysterious windmills and hidden coves are a world apart from the verdant main island of Madeira. Gone are the pebble beaches and levadas, here it’s all about relaxing on the sandy beach and exploring the best views from the mountain peaks. On your own, rent a bike, scooter or car to explore the small island.
Madeira is still relatively undiscovered as a surf spot and has the additional advantage that you can surf there all year round. For novice surfers, there is a surf school on the safest surf beach on the island and for those experienced enough to head out on their own, your hotel in Porto da Cruz is within walking distance to the beach, allowing you to hit the waves whenever the conditions are right.
The south coast is tropical Madeira at its best. You’ll sleep in a traditional quinta with a swimming pool, tucked within a banana plantation on this sunny stretch of coastline.
