Surf spots of Madeira
4-Day North East Coast Stay with Surf Lesson - Madeira
Madeira is still relatively undiscovered as a surf spot and has the additional advantage that you can surf there all year round. For novice surfers, there is a surf school on the safest surf beach on the island and for those experienced enough to head out on their own, your hotel is within walking distance to the beach, allowing you to hit the waves whenever the conditions are right.

Arrive at the surf spot of Madeira
Today you will arrive in the north-east of the island and find the sleepy town of Porto da Cruz in a protected bay and only about thirty minutes from the airport. Your hotel is within walking distance of the black lava beach and has a natural saltwater pool. A room with a balcony and a nice shower will be just what you need after a day of surfing, as well as several restaurants with terraces on the waterfront, where you can meet other surfers and enjoy the local drink ‘poncha‘.
Surf's up and more!
The next few days are yours to hit the different surf spots and hone your skills. During your time here we’ll arrange for a surf lesson with a professional instructor to teach you the basics and get you on your way. Due to the location of the bay, the waves at Porto da Cruz are predictable and ideal for learning to surf. Sao Vicente is great for the surfer with more experience or those who want to build up their skills and challenge themselves. This area is not only good for surfing though. You can also see the mountains behind the village and there are miles of hiking trails along levadas (old irrigation canals) and all routes are well signposted.
Time to leave
Today may be the end of your Madeiran surf adventure, but there’s still more to see with trekking in the East or move on to spend some time refuelling back in the capital, Funchal, discovering its culinary delights.
North/East/Funchal – Mountain bike tour with guide
Today with an experienced guide and a few fellow adventurers, you’ll venture into the rugged nature by mountain bike. The best mountain bikes with cycling helmets are waiting for you. It is a tough, but rewarding trail, and whilst experience is a plus, it is not a must and people of all levels can take part. If you are staying in Funchal you will be picked up, otherwise you will make your own way to the starting point in Canico. After a full morning of exploring the countryside on two wheels, you will head back at your hotel in time for lunch.
