Isla Holbox
Overview
Holbox is an idyllic island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and a little slice of tropical bliss. There are virtually no cars or proper roads here, and the hotels, bars and restaurants are all pretty low-key. This is a place to relax on the beach or by the pool at your comfy hotel. You'll also take a boat trip to explore 3 uninhabited islands, and hopefully encounter dolphins and rays swimming beneath you.

Ferry to Holbox
The ferry to Isla Holbox leaves from the village of Chiquila, costs about £5, and takes around 40 minutes across the bright blue sea. Once you arrive you’ll make your way to your hotel near the white sandy beach (we recommend taking a golf-buggy taxi!), where you can settle in and enjoy a cocktail by the pool.
Total relaxation (and a boat trip..)
Although increasingly popular, Holbox has escaped the kind of mega-development you’ll find along the coast in Cancun, and retains its small town charm… in fact, the majority of the roads are still unpaved, and you’ll find virtually no cars here. There’s a decent selection of places to eat and drink though, and you can also rent bikes to explore the island. During the right seasons, you might catch a glimpse of bioluminescence or be able to see the whale sharks (Jun-Sep).
Whilst you’re here you’ll also join a boat trip which takes you to three uninhabited islands around the coast, where you’ll see flamingos, swim in a natural freshwater pool and will probably be joined by dolphins that often follow the boats. The remainder of your time here is completely free, so you can get into full holiday-mode and be just as lazy as you want to!
Back to the mainland
We can book a little longer for you here if you’d like more time on the island, otherwise it’ll be time to head back to the dock and catch the ferry back to Chiquila, from where we’ll arrange your onward transport.
