I first fell in love with South American when visiting Brazil and vowed to return and explore more. In 2006 I spent 6 weeks backpacking around Argentina and Chile, long enough to develop an unfaltering taste for red wine! Travelling through the Andes into Santiago was stunning but my real highlight in Chile was trekking in the Torres del Paine National Park and wandering up and down on the funiculars in Valparaiso. When I return I want to spend some time with some real life gauchos and visit the Atacama Desert.

Having travelled through the west coast of South America, Chile was the first country on my list, not being a fan of the cold I headed up the coast from Santiago to discover the capital, Valparaiso with its brightly coloured buildings. A highlight for me was sand boarding in the Atacama desert, then washing away the sand with a nice Pisco sour. Staying in San Pedro de Atacama was like arriving in to a Spaghetti Western, with the dusty roads and white buildings.
