Day 1 – Along the coast to Shimoda

You will travel by train via Atami and Ito to Izukyū-Shimoda. Depending on your arrival time, you can either take the hotel shuttle or a taxi. You will spend the next few days at a hotel on Shirahama Beach, a few kilometres north of Shimoda. Down here in the far south, the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed. Shirahama Beach is truly a surfer’s paradise. If the weather is good, you might even spot surfers riding the waves in the evening. Around your hotel and the bay, there are a few small cafés and ramen shops perfect for a relaxed lunch. Since there are very few restaurants in the area, dinner is included at the hotel.

Day 2 – Time to relax

Today is yours to do what you like, the swimming pool, Onsen and beach are probably all you need for a perfectly relaxing day. If you feel like doing something more active, just ask your hotel for suggestions. Depending on the season, stand up paddleboarding and surf lessons are available, even for beginners.

Something to bear in mind is that Shirahama Beach is well known for its sunrises. The best way to see it is to walk to the red torii, which stands on a rock in the sea at the northern end of the bay. In July, the sun rises at around 5.00 a.m. Not keen on getting up that early? No problem. The red torii makes a great photo at any time of day.

Day 3 – On to your next adventure

Today you will enyoy your final breakfast at the beach and then continue with your onward travel arrangements, unless you need some more beach time in which case we would be happy to extend your stay just let us know!

If not, take the shuttle or a taxi back to the town. If you have a little time to spare, it is worth exploring Shimoda, the place where Japan officially reopened to the world after centuries of isolation. Stroll along Perry Road with its canal and traditional houses or visit the Black Ship.
