I used to work for a tour company leading group tours throughout Central America and always loved passing through my favourite country Nicaragua. In 2005 I spent time volunteering and climbing the volcanoes around Colonial Leon and loved it. It’s real and raw whereas Granada I found to be slightly grander. Trying to learn to surf in San Juan del Sur was great fun! I recommend horse riding as a great way to explore Omepete Island with its two picture perfect volcanoes. Nicaraguans are friendly and keen to show the best of their country and it has a distinctly different vibe to its richer neighbour Costa Rica. An another note Nicaraguan Flor de Caña is the finest rum I have ever tasted, especially the aged 12 anos.
Nicaragua is on top of my bucket list of destinations to visit on my next Central American holiday. I haven’t had the opportunity to explore this incredible country on my previous travels but cannot wait to soak up the colonial history of Granada, hang out with the Nicos in San Ramon and spend a few nights relaxing in the Corn Islands where I’m just too excited to pull on a snorkelling mask and explore the underwater world. I am obsessed with volcanoes so I will of course be visiting Masaya Volcano and of course there is Omotepe Island too, home to not just one but two volcanoes! Surrounded by lush forests and waterfalls there are some fantastic hikes to go on.
