Bako National Park, tucked away in a mangrove forest near Kuching, lies on the edge of a beautiful coastline scattered with intriguing rock formations. During your trek through the jungle, keep a close eye on the branches above you and you may see the most famous inhabitant of this charming forest: the Proboscis monkey. Whilst exploring the park you'll see many other different types of monkeys as well, such as Silver Leaf Monkeys and mischievous Macaques. Small, winding paths will take you through the forest and lead you to deserted tropical beaches for a refreshing dip.

Day 1 – Kuching – Bako National Park

This morning you’ll be collected from your hotel in Kuching for the 40 minute transfer to the small village of Kampung Bako. Here you’ll board a boat that will take you across a winding river to your final destination, Bako National Park. One of the first things you’ll notice are the imposing rock formations jutting up from the water. Your boat will weave past the rocks and within half an hour you’ll reach the mangrove forest and the pier where your boat will dock.

As you settle into your National Park lodge you can learn about the local inhabitants; long tail macaques, silver leaf monkeys, bears and deer all call this place home along with the most prominent, the world-famous Proboscis monkey, which can only be found on Borneo. This afternoon you will join your group and guide to trek deeper into the jungle. By late afternoon you’ll find yourself at a beautiful beach; just in time to watch the fiery golden sun sink into the sea.

Day 2 – Exploring the park

Today you’ll be up early to explore the park and hopefully spot some monkeys and other wildlife along the way. The most popular trail is a 3.5km trek to Tajor Waterfall, passing ancient trees and plants such as the Venus flytrap, along the way. The trail leads to a tropical beach where you can take a dip in the surf to cool down, which is just what you’ll need after the humidity of the jungle. Afterwards, you’ll trek back to the park headquarters for lunch before sailing through the mangrove forest to Kampung Bako where a bus will be waiting to take you to back to Kuching.
