Take a trip to Granada; the oldest city in Central America. You’ll find colonial buildings, churches and beautiful squares. In contrast to the rest of Nicaragua, Granada city is well developed for tourism and therefore offers a wide choice of hotels and restaurants.

Ometepe Island offers a real break from the busy cities. The local people are very friendly and call their island ‘a haven of peace and tranquillity’.

Leon is a vibrant cultural city, home to the largest cathedral in Latin America and packed with artists, students and philosophers. You can’t help but notice the history of this place. You’ll catch a unique glimpse of the cultural heritage

Cigars have made Esteli a rich town; ironic considering its socialist roots. This unusual dichotomy makes it an interesting place to visit. Wander through the streets, and in the same breath, you’ll happen upon an 1823 cathedral and a mural recently painted by a local community project.

Surround yourself with deep gorges, mountain ridges and cloud forests in Nicaragua’s wild north. Take a walking trail through the lush vegetation with a local guide in one of the best reserves for spotting the resplendent quetzal bird (though you’ll still need to keep your eyes peeled).

The Matagalpa region is a paradise for adventure travellers. Soaring mountains, indigenous villages, a temperate climate and German history can all be found in Matagalpa.

If you’d like to experience the real Nicaragua, then this homestay is ideal. Not only will you be able to immerse yourself in the culture of a local family by staying in their home, you’ll also try your hand at some home-cooked Nicaraguan food.

The tiny, tropical Corn Islands may not be as well known as other Caribbean islands, but that’s part of their appeal. If you’re looking for azure waters lapping against white sand, then you have come to the right place.

Although you won’t find powdery white sand beaches on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast, you will discover clapboard houses, chilled-out restaurants and fantastic sunsets. This stretch of coastline is well known for its surfing breaks, and during your stay, we’ll arrange for you to have a go yourself.

Get up close to this mammoth volcano and try to spot the molten lava inside as you stand at the crater rim. During your time in Managua we’ll organise an afternoon trip to Masaya Volcano for the best chance to see the red lava as the sun slowly sets.

“Nicaragua was always my favourite place to pass through during my time spent in Central America. It’s full of surprises, from its coffee-rich plantations and volcanic islands, to its colonial cobbles streets & coral reefs.”
