Your day-by-day itinerary
Arequipa - Colca Canyon
After breakfast you’ll climb into the 4×4 with your friendly driver and set off for the Colca Canyon. Leaving Arequipa, the road twists steeply into the mountains, with some stunning views of El Misti volcano. Around midday, you’ll reach the small town of Chivay. Although it’s no stranger to tourists, Chivay has remained beautifully unchanged over time and it’s a great place to see mountain life.
Next, you’ll continue into the canyon, with jaw-dropping views around every bend. Deeper than the Grand Canyon and over 100 metres long, it’s a true stunner. In the afternoon, you’ll reach your mountain lodge, where you’ll stay in a bungalow with a private veranda overlooking the valley. You’ll also find hot springs for some relaxation, hop in, cool down and soak up the scenery.
Colca - Cruz del Condor - Arequipa or Puno
Today you’ll set off early in the soft morning light. Following the road along the base of the canyon, you’ll pass several sleepy villages buried in the towering landscape. Soon, you’ll arrive at the Cruz del Condor viewpoint, for a close-up experience. Here, between 8am and 10am, the sun begins to heat the canyon, creating warm currents in the air. The condors love to glide on these thermals.
After this you’ll begin the journey back to Arequipa, stopping at several soaring viewpoints on the way. You’ll also visit the mountain villages of Maca and Yanque, rich in rural tradition and beauty. Tracing the winding roads back through the mountains, you’ll eventually reach Arequipa, where your journey ends. Alternatively you can travel on to Puno, just let us know.
