Cuba highlights

Statue and palm trees Santiago de Cuba

There are so many things to see and do in Cuba – whether you decide to soak up the crumbling nostalgia of Havana, cruise along the cobbled streets of Trinidad or sit back, relax and drink rum beside the Caribbean Sea. Take a look below to discover our top ten highlights of Cuba.

1. Rooftop terrace dining in Havana

It can be easy to get consumed with making sure you see all the sights that Cuba has to offer. Sometimes, simple is best though. A day spent eating, drinking and watching the world go by on one of Havana’s many rooftop terraces, such as Hotel Plaza and Hotel Manzana, is not to be missed. Alternatively, while it doesn’t have a rooftop, the iconic El Floridita bar is certainly worth a visit. If it was good enough for Hemingway…

2. Get out of old town

Everyone knows about the old town in Havana, but why not get lost in central Havana and marvel in the contrast between the two? Full of interesting talking points and architecture, we recommend a central Havana stroll before heading along the Malecón in a classic car, out into the leafy suburbs which used to be the playground of the rich and famous.

3. Photography is a must

The classic, vintage cars cruising the roads and the picturesque, colonial buildings make Cuba a place unlike anywhere else. Make sure you have a good camera to hand to capture this wonderful country in all its unique beauty.

4. Tobacco hills of Vinales

Take a stroll, or even a horse ride, through the beautiful countryside around Vinales – a sleepy town which is the heartland of Cuba’s tobacco-growing community. You can visit the farmers themselves, and try a freshly rolled Cuban cigar, straight from the source.

5. Cayo Levisa

This small, quiet island of Cayo Levisa, just off the northern coast near Vinales is well worth a visit, whether you’re staying in the only hotel there, or just visiting on a day trip.

These picture-perfect white sands next to the bright blue Caribbean is what holidays are all about.

6. La Redaccion

In the town of Trinidad you’ll discover this great restaurant and bar, based in a traditional colonial house from the 1880s. Not only does it have an amazing menu, especially for vegans and vegetarians, but it has an authentic atmosphere and friendly owners too.

7. Topes de Collantes

This national park north of Trinidad has an incredible network of hiking trails, and you’ll be treated to lots of natural wonders while visiting this reserve. Filled with caves, rivers, waterfalls and pools, it’s well worth a day trip in this natural playground.

8. Cienfuegos

An overnight stop in this city, known for its French colonial architecture and attractive waterfront, will allow you to explore a quieter, less busy alternative to Havana. On your strolls, you’re bound to come across quaint local restaurants, couples dancing salsa on the streets and local kids splashing in the water. Finish your time here by watching the sunset over the pier.

9. Wildlife in Peninsula de Zapata National Park

A few hours here are a few hours well spent. Even if you don’t consider yourself a bird lover, it’s difficult not to marvel at some of the magnificent creatures found at the Peninsula de Sapata Park, including flamingos and pelicans.
