Vegan and vegetarian delights in Thailand

Blog

Travelling with specific dietary requirements can be daunting when you don't speak the language. However, if you are vegan or vegetarian, you’ll find that in Thailand most dishes can be adapted quite easily, with no flavour sacrificed. On a recent trip to the land of smiles Katy delved into all the vegan options and made it her mission to try as many as possible. Big eats in Bangkok

Starting my journey in Bangkok, I used my free morning to seek out the reclining buddha at Wat Pho. After admiring the big golden guy and a lot of walking, I was ready to EAT. A quick online search found me a local vegan Thai restaurant just round the corner, where I demolished a coconut curry with tri-colour rice. Absolutely delicious! This was just the fuel I needed for my cycle tour around the city that afternoon.

Working up an appetite at the waterfall

The next stop on our adventure was Erawan National Park. After an adventurous hike through the jungle, climbing steps carved between the trees all the way to the 7th tier, followed by a swim in the crystal clear pools to cool off, it was definitely time for another big meal! Lunch did not disappoint…Tofu Pad Thai… YUM! The guide couldn’t have been more helpful in communicating my dietary requirements with the kitchen and the result was another delicious Thai treat.

Fuelling up for adventure in Khao Sok

Spending the next evening dining at our hotel in Khao Sok, we were presented with a beautifully colourful feast. Fried rice, tofu & mixed vegetables, vegetable spring rolls…and saving the best for last…MANGO STICKY RICE! This dish really does have my heart and should be a staple for any plant-based eaters travelling through Thailand!

Finding comfort food in Ko Tao

Sometimes it’s nice just to have a taste of home and enjoy a good old burger! On the menu this evening was one of the tofu variety which came complete with a superb sea view at Sensi Paradise in Ko Tao. While it was far from the aromatically mouth-watering flavours of Thai food, it was a wonderful comfort meal and I really enjoyed it.

Ko-conut Samui

For my final veggie delight…I give you THE COCONUT. The one and only, the myth, the legend. Full of electrolytes to keep you hydrated in that humid Thai heat, you simply can’t go wrong with a coconut. Available just about everywhere, and super cheap. This one happened to be on charming Ko Samui, another satisfying beach backdrop!
