Otjiwarongo Safari
Bite-sized trip
Day 1 – Arrival at the game reserve
Wildlife spotting begins as soon as you arrive at the entrance to the Okonjati Game Reserve (just south of Otjiwarongo) so keep your camera to hand! This reserve was one of Namibia’s first private game reserves, and is home to over 8,000 animals, including elephants, lions, cheetahs, and black and white rhinos. You’ll be staying in a lodge in the middle of the bush, where you will be welcomed with a refreshing drink and maybe a slice of homemade cake!
You can relax by the beautiful swimming pool, or pull up a chair beside the waterhole at the front of the lodge, and watch the wildlife enjoying a drink. If you would like to take a game drive this afternoon, speak to the team at your lodge. They can also arrange bird spotting tours and rhino tracking.
Day 2 – On safari in the game reserve
After a breakfast feast, you can decide which activities you would like to do today. The safaris operate in the morning or the afternoon and only trained rangers can lead these, so you won’t see many other cars within the reserve. As the private reserves are less known to travellers, it is relatively quiet and your chances of spotting wildlife are much higher. In addition to the big four, there are also much smaller game to see such as the black-backed jackal and the aardvark. Besides the safaris, you can also visit a nearby school with a guide and learn about how the founder of the lodge shares their knowledge of the conservation of nature and wildlife with the local children.

Day 3 – Departure from Okonjati Game Reserve
After breakfast, it’s time to leave the game reserve. This may be the last stop on your Namibia trip, in which case you’ll head back to Windhoek to board the plane home. But if you’re continuing your journey, you could drive north for more wildlife spotting in Etosha National Park or travel to Damaraland for incredible elephant spotting opportunities.
