The following day you’ll get under the skin of Bangkok and get to know the city in a more authentic way. Wander through alleyways, learning about guardian spirits and amulets at local markets and exploring Bangkok’s maze of canals or Klongs by longtail boat.
Days 4-6 – Elephant Encounters in Chiang Mai
Next you’ll travel north by sleeper train, meeting locals and fellow travellers along the way. You’ll have a comfy bed and the journey takes around 13 hours. When you arrive in Chiang Mai, you’ll make your way to your hotel in the centre of the city. With a laid-back, spiritual atmosphere, Chiang Mai is a walkable city scattered with sacred temples and shrines. Tonight you’ll explore the city’s cuisine with a guided food safari through markets and street stalls, delicious!
Next you will get up close to the gentle giants at the Elephant Nature Park. You’ll be collected from your hotel in Chiang Mai and transferred to the park an hour away. You will learn all about the issues faced by elephants in Asia and the personal stories of those rescued by the park. You will have the chance to observe these majestic animals and aid in their rehabilitation before returning to Chiang Mai in the early evening for another night in the city.
Days 6-9 – Hikes, Bikes and Bamboo Rafting
This 3-day trip in the rural North is lead by an experienced local guide, with a small group of other travellers. You’ll stay overnight with the locals, such as the Karen hill tribes. Hike along paddy fields, through amazing jungle scenery and past waterfalls and rapids. Cycle through fruit plantations, where you’ll get a totally different view of the area and finish on a bamboo raft, watching the children from the villages playing on the banks of the river.
After your rural stay you’ll return to Chiang Mai for one more night. The following day you will take a domestic flight to Bangkok to connect on to your international flight home, filled with memories of your Northern Thailand adventure.
