Day 1 – Arrival at the Juanilama community

Today you will travel to a lesser explored area of Costa Rica – one hour north of La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano. Arriving in a typical Tico village at the Juanilama community you will be immersed in local culture and tradition, learning all about everyday rural life. The initiative was launched by a group of women to introduce travellers to villages and communities off the usual tourist trail and give the women a sense of independence and entrepreneurialism.

Seven families are involved with the project, all specialising in their own area of expertise, from agriculture to handicrafts. On arrival, you’ll have a typical lunch and can take a look around the community, walk to a waterfall and take in your tropical surroundings. You’ll stay with a local family in their home or an adjacent bungalow – they take it in turns to all benefit from guests. The rooms are simple, usually with a shared bathroom, but staying the night in a Tico’s home will really give you an insight into life in this community.

Day 2 – Agricultural tour & cooking with a community guide

The following morning, you’ll tuck into a tasty breakfast before joining one of the local women to learn about the produce they grow in this area. She will tell you about the plants and their many uses whilst you collect ingredients for your cooking lesson afterwards at her home. You’ll help her create a traditional Costa Rican snack, before returning to your host family for a spot of lunch.

Now it’s time to wave goodbye to your friendly hosts and continue your journey through Costa Rica, having learned more about rural communities and life off the beaten track. By visiting this area, you’ll not only create some unique memories for yourself but give something back to the community living here.
