Arrival in Maskeliya
As you journey towards Maskeliya, you’ll see thundering waterfalls, dense forests, and endless tea fields with local pickers at work in their brightly coloured saris. If you’re taking the 4-5 hour journey from Colombo or Negombo, you’ll stop for lunch in the peaceful little town of Kitulgali before arriving at your hotel. Maskeliya is an old, quiet town in rural surroundings. There’s not much to do here, but we’d recommend getting an early night anyhow, ahead of tomorrow morning’s adventure.
Climb Adam's Peak & Departure
Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) is the most sacred mountain in Sri Lanka and most Sri Lankans aim to climb it at least once in their lifetime, so you’re unlikely to have to mountain all to yourself! You’ll be up at 2am for the short drive to the start point, from where you’ll see the ribbons of twinkling lights illuminate the mountain in the distance, and will join the throng of excited locals and travellers beginning their climb.
It can be quite chilly in the morning, so it’s a good idea to wear layers, as well as bringing a torch and plenty of water. It usually takes 2-4 hours to ascend the 5,500 steps, where you can finally catch your breath and watch as the landscape in front of you is drenched in the morning sunlight. Suddenly you’ll forget all about that pain in your legs, and you can take it all in for as long as you like.
Your legs will probably feel like jelly as you begin the descent, but after an hour or two you’ll be back at the bottom where your driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel. Here you can have a little rest and relax, before continuing to your next destination when you’re ready.
