Overview

The waters around Vancouver Island are reknown as some of the best in the world for watching whales (from mid-April to late-October). Victoria is only a short ferry hop away from Vancouver and has a charming English flair. Here you’ll head out on a red zodiac in search of these incredible creatures, which slowly glide past Victoria bay. After whale watching, you can embrace the English feel of the city with a high tea, or take a walk through the beautifully maintained botanical gardens.

Arrival in Victoria

Today you’ll drive to Victoria, a city with a distinctly British feel, on Vancouver Island. Victoria was colonised by the Brits in 1843, which explains the brick houses and well-kept gardens that you’ll spot throughout the city. We recommend spending the afternoon having a traditional high tea of scones, sandwiches and tea in the elegant Empress hotel in Victoria Harbour before heading back to your hotel.

Whale Watching

Today, you’ll set off for your whale watching excursion. At the harbour, you’ll board a large rubber dinghy, Zodiac, to search for the different whales that live in these waters. There are three species of whale living here, and around 30 of each. If you’re extremely lucky you might see a ‘superpod’ of whales, but even if you only spot a few, this won’t be an experience you’ll forget in a hurry. Keep your camera in hand, as you only have a couple of seconds to grab that snap of the tail sticking out of the water!

After the whale excursion, you’ll travel back to Victoria Harbour where you’ll have the rest of the day free to explore this atmospheric Canadian city on your own. Stroll through the Inner Harbour, Victoria’s Boulevard, which is alive with the hustle and bustle of street vendors, artists, tourists and boats.

Seaplane Flight over Victoria

If you want to explore Victoria’s surroundings in a different way, you can take a seaplane on an adventurous flight over the city and surrounding area. It’s a 30-minute flight and you’ll be flying over the city of Victoria and the Strait of Juan Fuca. Sit back and enjoy the magnificent blue bays and panoramic views of the surrounding green hills and islands. In the background, you’ll see the peaks of the mountain range that lies along the coast of British Columbia.

Departure from Victoria

It’s time to wave goodbye to Victoria, and if you’d like to extend your stay on Vancouver Island, you can head to Quadra Island and enjoy a bit of sea kayaking. Otherwise, if you’re in the mood for more wildlife spotting, then head over to Tofino, on the wild cost of the Pacific Rim where you can go in search of black bears.
