While not a beautiful place itself, Berastagi is a breezy highland town surrounded by some of Sumatra’s most breathtaking scenery. You’ll spend one night in Berastagi, giving you time to explore the lush hills of the Karo highlands and haggle at the local fruit market. We'll include a guide so you can set off to climb the Sibayak volcano, its crater coughing tendrils of sulphurous smoke into the air.

Day 1 – Arrival in Berastagi
You’ll travel from the jungle to Berastagi; past local villages and countryside and twisting roads. Arriving in Berastagi in the afternoon, you can visit the local market in the town centre, spilling over with fruit, fish, vegetables and almost everything else under the sun. You’ll stay in a simple hotel with views across the green fields.
Day 2 – Climbing Sibayak Volcano
Early this morning your guide will pick you up and you can start the steep but mostly gradual ascent up the sulfuric Sibayak volcano. After a couple of hours, you’ll reach the summit, before descending to numerous natural hot springs to relax. After your relaxation, your driver will take you to your next destination. Due to the quiet nature of Berastagi we don’t usually recommend more than one night here.
