Punta Arenas
Suitable for families
Overview
Punta Arenas, on the southernmost tip of Chile is a surprisingly lively place. The town has the rugged atmosphere of a remote sea port, but you’ll also find brightly coloured houses, leafy parks and an interesting history. If you want to discover a remote area and take a boat trip to Magdalena Island to see a huge colony of Magellanic penguins, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Arrival in Punta Arenas
On arrival at the tiny airport you’ll be transferred directly to Punta Arenas, 20 minutes away, and dropped off at your guesthouse where you’ll be staying for the next two nights. Depending on your time of arrival you could take a walk round town. Punta Arenas was once a major trading post area ruled by sheep ranchers and sailors. The elegant houses are a reminder of the town’s prosperity.
Magdalena Island
This morning you’re free to explore the town on your own. In the afternoon you’ll be picked up at the hotel and driven down to the harbour for the boat trip along the Strait of Magellan to Magdalena Island, home to an enormous penguin colony. Pathways lead through the island and you can explore to your heart’s content. The penguins have right of way of course, and they don’t stop for anybody!
