Sorrento is the lemon capital of Italy, a peaceful place on the Gulf of Naples and the ideal base for a visit to Pompeii. You’ll wander the streets of the ancient Roman city and see the bathhouses and ancient murals that have been frozen in time. Sleeping in a hotel by the sea, you’ll be perfectly placed to explore the surrounding area, working up an appetite before you make your own traditional lemon ice cream.

Trip to Vico Equense, Sorento

Today you’ll arrive in Vico Equense, a suburb of Sorrento, where the rooms of your hotel are spacious and the pleasant sea breeze blows in off the Gulf of Naples. If you need to freshen up after the drive, float in the swimming pool as you look out over bay and the Vesuvius volcano. There’s a free shuttle bus to take you to the centre of the city, where you can have a bite to eat in the evening or just walk the streets to the Piazza Tasso.

Pompeii, Vesuvius & ice cream

This morning you’ll want to rise early, as there is a lot on your doorstep. First, dive into the past and drive to the ruins of Pompeii. Here you will find one of the best preserved remains from the Roman Empire with streets, temples, fountains, and frescoes all intact. You can even still see old cart tracks on the street. The whole time you’ll have Mount Vesuvius towering over you and after lunch it’s time to drive to the volcano. You’ll climb its fertile flanks passing fruit trees, flowers and vines on a path made of black lava. If you’re lucky, you’ll have fantastic views over Pompeii, the Gulf of Naples and the hinterland.

All that hard work yesterday, you deserve a more relaxed day today. After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, take the shuttle bus to Sorrento and head to Gelateria David, a local ice cream parlour. Time to make and taste the famous ice cream with Mario, the owner. He’s full of passion and loves to tell everyone about the special ingredients and techniques. After the demonstration, you’ll start making and tasting your own ice cream. Before you leave, you’ll be given a certificate that contains a secret recipe for real homemade Italian gelato and limoncello.

Departure from Sorrento

Sleep in today and enjoy your extensive breakfast. Then, it’s time to get back on the road as it meanders along the sea and the villages, which cling to the steep cliff coast. Choose to either head to the Amalfi Coast or to Ostuni in Puglia with its many olive groves.
