Overview

Cayo Levisa Island is a little nook of beach bliss off Cuba’s north coast. Heading for the island, you’ll be following in the footsteps of Hemingway, who discovered this archipelago on a fishing trip from Cayo Paraíso - the next islet along. You’ll spend two nights in a basic mid-sized resort on Cayo Levisa, without a care in the world. It’s sun-drenched, secluded and downright dreamy.

Arrival on Cayo Levisa

When you reach the small harbour at Palma Rubia, you’ll hop in a boat for the 45-minute crossing to Cayo Levisa. Needless to say, it’s a really beautiful ride. Uninterrupted sapphire waters shimmer in the sunlight until the sugary sands of Cayo Levisa appear on the horizon.

Couple on a boat

You’ll stay in a simple wooden cabana next to the spotless white beach, where there isn’t a grain of sand out of place. Each cabin has air-conditioning television and a little terrace for kicking back and soaking up the sea views. The resort is home to a small restaurant (meals are included), as well as a bar and a hand shop – everything you need on your doorstep. Its a little outdated and rough around the edges, but we think the setting more than makes up for it.

Free Time & Departure

The island is all about taking a break from reality. Doze under a coconut palm, collapse into a lounger and cool down with a dip in the bright blue sea. Forget all about your real-world troubles – and your shoes. If you’re itching to explore, hire a kayak and paddle around the coastline, drinking in the views and the sunshine as you go.

Sunbathing on the beach

The areas around Cayo Levisa and nearby Cayo Paraiso are terrific for snorkelling and diving, and you’ll be able to hire equipment locally. In the evening, you’ll find a bottle of rum with your name on it at the bar, so order a cocktail and catch a Caribbean sunset. The next day you’ll pack up your things and wave goodbye to the island life.
