Pidurangala Rock

Day 1 – Arrival in Sigiriya

Today you’ll be travelling to the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka, where ancient cities, crumbling temples and sacred Buddhist sites are aplenty. On route, you will stop at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Dambulla Caves, where ancient caves house hundreds of Buddha statues and colourful paintings, dating back as far as 2,000 years. Reaching the caves does involve a bit of climbing, but you’ll be rewarded with incredible views over the plains. Next, you’ll continue to your unique accommodation close to Sigiriya Rock, a beautifully crafted treehouse nestled in the forest. Although your cosy hideaway is simple, you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of crickets chirping and maybe a monkey or two swinging through the treetops, completely immersed in the natural surroundings.

Day 2 – Pedal to Pidurangala Rock

This morning, after a tasty local breakfast, you will be introduced to your trusty bicycle before cycling around the local area. You can ride along dusty tracks to the nearby Pidurangala Rock, passing vast paddy fields and smiling locals, before swapping two wheels for two feet. Once you reach the base, it’s a short climb of around 30-40 minutes to reach the top. The route involves some steps, loose rocks, and scrambling; therefore, it’s not ideal for younger children, but adventurous older kids

will love the challenge. When you reach the summit, you’ll be met with jaw-dropping views of Sigiriya Rock rising in the distance, surrounded by lush forests and shimmering lakes. If you’d rather not climb the rock, however, there is still plenty to enjoy from ground level, from temples to local villages and beautiful views all around

There are no kids’ bikes available, so the cycling experience is suitable for children aged 10 years+

Day 3 – Departure from Sigiriya

After breakfast, you will be saying goodbye to the forest as you continue on your family journey through Sri Lanka. Go in search of elephants on a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, explore the lush green tea hills in Ella, or cycle among the maze of crumbling temples in Polonnaruwa.
