✓ Discover hidden shrines as you hike the ancient Nakahechi trail
✓ Join a hands-on workshop to craft washi the traditional way
✓ Float down the Kumano River, following the famous pilgrimage route
Feel like a samurai walking the sacred path of Kumano Kodo, one of the only two pilgrimage routes in the world recognised by UNESCO. In the next few days you'll hike through a network of ancient trails connecting significant shrines and temples. You'll explore the most picturesque part of the Kii peninsula with its everchanging landscape as you walk through the forests, along the rivers and past the mountains and waterfalls. This is a walk to remember!

Day 1 – On to Tanabe!
Today you set out on your journey. Lace up your shoes and put on your hiking boots, because you are about to walk the famous Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. For centuries, pilgrims have followed this path, and along the way you might even meet a Japanese pilgrim dressed in white, which would be a truly special experience.
We have arranged two atmospheric overnight stays for you in the heart of the Kumano Kodo region. You will be staying in a traditional Japanese guesthouse called a minshuku. From here you can walk through unspoiled nature, follow gentle streams, pass centuries-old wooden houses, and visit the impressive Buddhist temples that are part of this ancient route. Your pilgrimage ends at the iconic red temple with a magnificent 133-meter waterfall as its backdrop.
Before you leave, we will provide you with detailed information about the different hiking routes in the area so you can choose the one that suits you best. And if the distance feels a little too long, you can always hop on one of the local buses along the way.
Day 2 – Halfway there
Start your day with a good breakfast and pack a lunch, as another long hike of about seven to eight hours lies ahead. The trail takes you through peaceful forests and past scenic viewpoints, with small shrines along the way where you can collect pilgrimage stamps. For the final stretch, a short bus ride brings you to Hongu Taisha, the heart of the Kumano Kodo. Take your time to visit the temple and soak in the rich Japanese atmosphere. Your journey ends in the picturesque onsen village of Yunomine, where a soothing hot bath awaits you at your cozy minshuku or ryokan. And if you are in the mood for something fun, you can even boil raw eggs in the natural hot spring water that flows through the village.

Day 3 – To your next destination or extend your time on the pilgrimage route
The next morning, you can continue your journey to Koyasan. Want to continue your pilgrimage? Extend this module with an overnight stay near the famous Nachi Taisha temple or stay an extra night in the onsen village. There are plenty of beautiful hiking trails and temples nearby to keep you entertained for another day.
