Day 1 – Arrive in Tromsø
Once you’ve landed in Tromsø and are through security, grab a taxi and head to the city centre. Check into your perfectly located hotel, where everything can be reached within 10 minutes on foot. Tromsø is a student city, which means there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to enjoy a snack and a drink. If you like a beer, visit the Mack brewery, the northernmost beer brewery in the world! Guided tours are offered on weekdays, but you can also pop straight into the adjacent Ølhallen Brewpub for a beer tasting.
Day 2 – Whale watching during Fjord Cruise
Today a fjord cruise is on the program. From the end of October to the end of January, there is a good chance that you can spot orcas and humpback whales here. The whales follow the schools of herring that migrate through the fjords during this time. With a special electric hybrid catamaran you’ll go out on the water in search of these majestic animals. As you approach the whales, the captain will switch to the electric motor so that you can get close to the whales without disturbing them. If possible, they’ll also lower a hydrophone underwater to pick up the sounds of the whales for you to hear them hunting the herring together. A very special experience to see and hear them so close! Once back on land, relax at your hotel or head into the city for dinner.
Day 3 – Husky tour through Norwegian Lapland
From Tromsø you will then be driven inland to the husky kennels, where you will meet these furry friends. Upon arrival, you will be provided with warm winter clothes, gloves and snow boots, which are necessary for the tour. After a short explanation you’ll set off two by two, with one person steering the dogs and the other sitting in the sled. Halfway through the journey of approximately you’ll then switch positions. It’s really fun, but secretly also quite intense and you really have to work as a team. Red-cheeked and with a big smile on your face, you’ll head back to camp for a cup of hot chocolate and cake to refuel. Afterwards you will be brought back to Tromsø and have the rest of the day free.
Day 4 – Northern Lights in Norway
Tonight you will hunt for the Northern Lights. Whilst you can also spot the Northern Lights from Tromsø itself, your chances are a lot bigger if you are outside the city. Here you will not be bothered by light pollution or buildings that limit your view. Depending on the weather conditions, you will be taken to one of five base camps. There are huts or tents where you can warm up with hot drinks, cake and soup, and if the weather permits a campfire will be lit making it very cosy. If it becomes cloudy, your guide will check whether it is better at one of the other locations and you may then go there. Once you’ve taken as many pictures as you can of this breathtaking spectacle, you’ll be taken back to Tromsø at around midnight.
Day 5 – Back home, or extend a few more nights?
After breakfast today, your journey to the north of Norway is over and you’ll take a taxi back to the airport. With a bit of luck, you’ll have crossed the Northern Lights off your bucket list and had the chance to ride with huskies. If you want to stay longer in Norway, that is of course possible and there is plenty of exciting activities to do. Just ask your travel specialist to help plan this for you.
