Stung Treng kayakers Cambodia

Day 1 – Arrival in Stung Treng

You will travel by minibus to the small, peaceful town of Stung Treng, nestled on the banks of the Mekong River. The journey will take you through rural Cambodia, passing lush rice paddies, palm groves and local villages, where you will get a glimpse into the traditional way of life here.

You will be staying in a rustic, riverside lodge far from the tourist crowds, just outside of Stung Treng town. This afternoon is yours to spend as you wish: stroll along the river, sample the local cuisine or relax overlooking the water. Tomorrow, you’ll explore Koh Han Island by kayak, a hidden gem in the Mekong River.

Day 2 – Kayaking to Koh Han Island

This morning, it’s an early start as you will be heading out to explore the Mekong River by kayak, starting with a boat ride over to Koh Han Island. Alongside a local guide, you will cruise downstream past lush green banks, sandbars and small islands, soaking in the calm and peaceful atmosphere. Keep your eyes peeled for waterfowl gliding across the water and local fishermen in traditional fishing boats. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a rare Irrawaddy dolphin surfacing in the distance.

After around two hours, you’ll reach Koh Han, a long island known for its peaceful atmosphere and rich birdlife. From here, you will continue by kayak and paddle along the shore, learning about the island and the small community that lives here. Your guide will explain how sustainable tourism contributes to their income and the conservation of the natural environment, helping to protect the community’s way of life. Next, you will enjoy a delicious lunch before returning to Stung Treng by boat and admiring the sunset over the river.

Day 3 – Departure from Stung Treng

After breakfast, you’ll say goodbye to peaceful Stung Treng and board the bus for Siem Reap or Kratie. Along the way, the landscape gradually changes from lush green banks on the Mekong to drier plains and bustling villages where daily life unfolds along the roadside. You will pass vibrant markets, ancient temples, and vast fields, typical of rural Cambodia. The bus will make a few short stops along the way to collect passengers, so you can stretch your legs and grab a bite to eat en route.
