Jen & Jo’s top 5 Bhutan travel tips
Blog1. Learn to love cheese
The food in Bhutan doesn’t vary much and there’s one staple you can be sure of in every meal: cheese. Chilli cheese, potato cheese, broccoli cheese, the list goes on. Then there’s the Swiss Cheese factory in Bumthang, so you can have cheese for breakfast too.
Practice your snooker skills
Bhutan night life is pretty limited outside Thimphu, but almost every major town will have at least one snooker hall. If you’re looking for something to do in the evening then why not head down and test your skills? Warning: the Bhutanese are pretty damn good, so if you’re thinking of challenging them to a game, you’d better get the practice in.
3. Bring ear plugs
During the day you’ll notice plenty of friendly Bhutanese dogs bounding about the streets. But come night fall the turf wars begin and in the city centre, there’s likely to be at least an hour of barking. If you’re a light sleeper, bring ear plugs.
4. Go when you can, not when you have to!
To the, er, little boys/girls room that is. Particularly when travelling in Eastern Bhutan, you’ll find long road journeys with very few toilet facilities. Don’t wait until you need it; go as soon as one’s available. Unless you’re happy to use the “open air toilet” of course.
5. Make the most of your guide!
Seems obvious, but the more your guide know about you the more they can help you make the most out of your trip. Allergic to nuts? Let your guide know and they can inform the hotel/restaurants. Work as a teacher in the UK? Let them know and they might be able squeeze in a visit to a local school. If they don’t know, they can’t help!
