Best places to see wildlife in Argentina

cape horn patagonia

Patagonia & the Southern Fjords

Patagonia is home to the most iconic wildlife in Argentina. On land, you can spot guanacos grazing, as well as rheas darting through the grasslands. Soaring overhead, you may see the Andean condor, which is one of the world’s largest flying birds. In the national parks, it’s even possible (although extremely rare) to spot a puma! One of the best ways to experience the best of this region’s wildlife is on a Patagonia cruise, where you’ll likely spot playful dolphins swimming alongside the Zodiac boats, sea lions basking on the rocky shores, and visit during the penguin season (Dec-Jan) to witness the Magellanic penguin colonies.

Peninsula Valdés

As a UNESCO-listed peninsula, this is one of the best places in Argentina to see marine life. From June to December, southern right whales come together to calve in sheltered bays, which is an incredible sight to witness from the cliffs or from a respectable distance on a boat. Between September and April, thousands of Magellanic penguins waddle along the shores, and throughout the year, you can see elephant seals, sea lions, and sometimes(if you’re lucky) you can spot orcas on the hunt.

Capybara Ibera Wetlands Argentina

Iberá Wetlands

The Iberá Wetlands are often called Argentina’s Pantanal, and are a haven for anyone wishing to spot birds and animals, including the world’s largest rodent – the capybara, caimans, herons, kingfishers, storks and parrots. The wetlands are one of the only places in Argentina where you can spot the endangered marsh deer, or newly introduced giant anteater.

Iguazú & the Atlantic Rainforest

Although Iguazu is most famous for its waterfalls, there is also a lot of wildlife home to this region. Keep your eyes out for coatis (raccoon-like animals) scurrying across the paths, howler monkeys calling from the trees, and groups of butterflies in every colour. When it comes to birdlife, you’ll be spoilt for choice with vibrant toucans, trogons, and hundreds of other species to find. Deeper into the rainforest, it’s possible to see tapirs, ocelots and even the elusive jaguar.
