Days 1-2 – Battambang – arrival & guided tour

Arriving in Battambang, you’ll settle into your comfortable resort which is located just outside the city centre. Despite being Cambodia’s second largest city Battambang is still a small town with a rural air. Full of crumbling French colonial architecture, it’s an atmospheric place for a wander, with a lively market and dozens of Khmer restaurants serving tangy local curries.

Today you’ll explore outside of the Battambang city, learning more about rural life. You’ll be picked up from your hotel by remok (tuk-tuk) at around 8am and travel to the ancient temple of Ek Phnom. You’ll continue your trip through authentic villages where you’ll watch sticky rice and fish paste being made and learn how the local people make bananas into paper.

Your next stop is the Phare Ponleu Selpak campus, a not-for-profit project and performing arts school – keeping traditional arts alive. After a lunch break by the river, you’ll continue to the Killing Caves (Phnom Sampeou). The beauty of this temple is the view; you can look out over the surrounding countryside, the green rice fields and Karst mountains.

Today, you’ll leave Battambang and head for the Thailand border, a scenic but bumpy journey. After one last look over your shoulder at Cambodia, you’ll cross into Thailand on foot. Once you’ve cleared immigration, you’ll meet your Thai driver on the other side and continue to Trat, where your Thailand adventure awaits.
