Pantanal Wetlands Safari

Bite-sized trip

  • Itinerary:
    Cuiaba - Pantanal - Cuiaba
  • Duration:
    4 days / 3 nights (flexible)
  • Price:
from £ 1,259.- per person (excluding flights)
Located in western Brazil the Pantanal wetlands is a natural habitat half the size of France. This is Brazil's cowboy territory and there are several large working cattle ranches in the area. There's less jungle here than in the Amazon and the landscape is wide open making it easier to spot animals in an outback-like atmosphere. You'll go on hikes, a boat ride, a canoeing trip or a horse ride with a local guide. What you do depends on weather conditions and your own preferences.

Day 1 – Cuiaba – Pantanal

On arrival at Cuiaba airport you’ll be picked up by your guide. The drive by 4WD truck to the Pantanal should take about 2 hours and will take you through the rugged eastern part of Brazil. Along the way you’ll drive through villages that resemble something out of a country and western movie, before passing through savannah landscape where you might see a few water birds.

After about 2 hours of driving, you’ll arrive at your accommodation. If you are travelling during the rainy season, the otherwise sandy roads can get quite muddy. During this trip you’ll stay at a fazenda (farm) where you can expect a very friendly and informal welcome. You’ll have time to relax or look around before you sit down for a meal. For the rest of the day you’re free to explore the surroundings.

Days 2-3 – Pantanal Guided Tours

You won’t need your alarm clock during this Pantanal trip as you’ll wake to the click-clack sound of the birds at dawn. The Pantanal is also home to rarer animals such as the armadillo, puma and jaguar. Whether or not you’ll get to see them during your trip remains to be seen but if you’re very lucky you might! Depending on which time of year you go on your Pantanal tour, you’ll either explore on foot, by horse or canoe.

Day 4 – Pantanal – Cuiaba

After breakfast you’ll travel across the Transpantaneira Highway from the Pantanal to Cuiaba. Your driver will stop the car any time you pass a point of interest so that you can look around and take pictures. Upon your arrival in Cuiaba you’ll be dropped off back at the airport.
