Visiting Tanzania in August
Weather and climate
Tanzania in August
August in Tanzania sees the end of the Great Migration north, although you can still spot some of the final herds making their way across the Mara River to the Masai Mara in Kenya. After several dry months, it’s even easier to spot the wildlife throughout the national parks, with less vegetation and groups congregating around water holes. The southern safari circuit is often quieter this month if you’re looking to avoid the crowds following the migration, with some great wildlife spotting, such as elephants in Tarangire National Park and less visited reserves.
If you’re planning to combine Tanzania and Kenya, you can also see the herds in the Masai Mara after making it safely across the river; it’s peak season here as well though.
Daytime temperatures are pleasant across the country, with dry days, lower humidity and no rainfall, although you can expect chillier temperatures in the early mornings and evenings, especially at Kilimanjaro, where it’s peak climbing season, and in highland areas. And it’s the best time to go to Tanzania for some beach time in Zanzibar to make the most of the sun and clear water for snorkelling this month.
