During this crossing your eyes will be in for a feast of nature. This bite-sized trip has everything from thundering waterfalls, to stunning sunsets over perfectly calm lakes, to some of the most beautiful volcanoes in the world such as Osorno. You’ll travel by various forms of transport including catamaran, boats and buses, straight across the Andes and through the oldest national park in South America.
Best known for its massive stone statues staring out across the endless Pacific Ocean, Easter Island is probably one of the most mysterious places on earth. Easter Island is one of the few places in Chile where you can kick off your hiking boots and pull on a pair of sandals. The island’s iconic statues are surrounded by hills and the island is known for its idyllic sun, sea and beach atmosphere.
Located a short ferry ride from mainland Chile, Chiloé offers a whole new kind of experience. Wet, wild and windy at times this island offers penguin-spotting, national park hiking and a distinctive mythological culture. The island is dotted with lush forests, remote farms and wooden churches, 16 of which boast Unesco World Heritage site status. With the freedom of your hire car you can explore the island at your own pace, staying in Ancud in the north and the capital Castro with it’s colourful stilted buildings along the waterfront. Check out of the mainstream for a few days and explore charming Chiloé.
This Torres trekking adventure is for real hikers. You will walk to the iconic granite towers at your own pace. After this, you’ll leave the groups behind you as you walk to the next refugio. On average, you’ll trek for about 7 hours a day; don’t underestimate this as it’s a mountainous area. A good level of fitness and some sturdy walking shoes will definitely come in handy here.
Torres del Paine is the trekker’s paradise of Southern America and one of the most stunning national parks on the continent. You‘ll travel by hire car from Puerto Natales to the granite ‘towers’ after which the park was named. You can follow the trail from your guesthouse up to a spectacular viewpoint.
Experience a unique road-trip which combines the breath-taking nature of Patagonia with a bucket-load of adventure, as you cross narrow and bumpy roads on your journey through the south of the continent. Far off the beaten track, the Carretera Austral and Ruta 40 wind their way alongside the Andes, crossing through both Argentina and Chile. Over the next few days, you’ll discover tiny rural towns, stunning mountain landscapes, wide plains, snow-capped volcanoes, and very few tourists.
Punta Arenas, on the southernmost tip of Chile is a surprisingly lively place. The town has the rugged atmosphere of a remote sea port, but you’ll also find brightly coloured houses, leafy parks and an interesting history. If you want to discover a remote area and take a boat trip to Magdalena Island to see a huge colony of Magellanic penguins, it’s definitely worth a visit.
Speeding across Chile’s Pan-American Highway may be the quickest way to travel through Chile, but what’s the rush? Why not take the back roads through the beautiful Chilean Lake District instead.
Travel from northern Chile by jeep through the strange high-altitude world of the Altiplano, filled with volcanic geysers, colourful lakes and flamingos, before finishing in Bolivia’s famous Uyuni Salt Flats.
Chile’s capital at the foot of the Andes is a truly cosmopolitan place on arrival you will be met by an English-speaking guide and transferred directly to your charming hotel. Spend the rest of the day exploring the city and soaking up the atmosphere. Find a little outdoor café, order a glass of Chilean wine and just watch the world go by. The following day head out in a small group with an experienced local guide to explore the city and all it has to offer. The Atacama Desert is a surreal, desolate expanse that stretches along the coast of northern Chile. It’s also the driest place on earth as it never rains! This Atacama trip begins in San Pedro de Atacama, a cheerful little town on the edge of the desert. In the afternoon, you’ll travel into the Atacama Desert to see the sunset and moonrise and watch the landscape around you gradually change colour.
Valparaiso boasts a large port, historic city centre built amongst the hills, cobbled streets and colourful houses. Well that’s just what you’ll get when you choose this Valparaiso tour and just some of the reasons why the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the next three days you’ll have plenty of time to see the sights on your own and with a guide for a city tour with a difference.
If you fancy yourself as a bit of a wine buff, you might like to start off your time in Chile with a few days in the Maipo Valley. Here you can enjoy clean, fresh air and views of the white tipped Andes Mountains. You can choose how active you’d like the following days to be: laze by the pool in your cosy hotel, rent a bike for a cycle through the vineyards or expand your wine knowledge with a tasting.
On your way to Peru or Chile, why not make a quick stopover in Bogota, the capital city of Colombia? Amble along cobbled streets, past colonial buildings and impressive street art then swing by a road-side cafe for a cup of tinto – a small cup of strong Colombian coffee.
