    Best known for its massive stone statues staring out across the endless Pacific Ocean, Easter Island is probably one of the most mysterious places on earth.     Located a short ferry ride from mainland Chile, Chiloé offers a whole new kind of experience. Wet, wild and windy at times this island offers penguin-spotting, national park hiking and a distinctive mythological culture. The island is dotted with lush forests, remote farms and wooden churches, 16 of which boast Unesco World Heritage site status. With the freedom of your hire car you can explore the island at your own pace, staying in Ancud in the north and the capital Castro with it’s colourful stilted buildings along the waterfront.     This Torres trekking adventure is for real hikers. You will walk to the iconic granite towers at your own pace. After this, you’ll leave the groups behind you as you walk to the next refugio. On average, you’ll trek for about 7 hours a day; don’t underestimate this as it’s a mountainous area. A good level of fitness and some sturdy walking shoes will definitely come in handy here.

    Torres del Paine is the trekker’s paradise of Southern America and one of the most stunning national parks on the continent.
