Olinda/Recife – Porto Galinhas
This morning you’ll be collected from your hotel by our English speaking local representative and given detailed driving directions and information about driving in Brazil. After you’ve received your briefing you will pick up your rental car and head south past sugarcane plantations to Porto Galinhas.
Porto de Galinhas – Free Day
The literal translation of Porto Galinhas is ‘chicken harbour’, so expect to see quite a few images of chickens around town. During this self drive trip you’ll stay at a colourful pousada by the beach, only 5 minutes away from town by car. While in ‘chicken town’, you’ll have a large selection of quirky souvenir shops to browse.
Today you’ll have a free day to relax by the pool or on the beach. If you would like to spend the day out and about, you can go on a dune buggy ride through the area surrounding Porto Galinhas – one of the most fun excursions in this area. Another option is a snorkelling trip to the coral reefs. The reefs are located right off the coast in protective sea lagoons. One of the Brazilian jangada fishing boats can take you to the lagoons or on sightseeing tours along the coastline. Excursions can be booked locally.
Porto Galinhas - Japaratinga – Maceió
Today you’ll travel further south down the coast. You’ll pass by dozens of beaches, you might want to stop off at the town of Barreiros and visit the Praia do Porto beach. When you reach Pontal de Boqueirao you’ll take the ferry across the river for 10 real, about £3. You’ll pass through a few more towns before arriving in Maceió, the capital of the state of Alagoas. It’s a friendly, sun-drenched town with a lively boulevard and fun beach bars.
Maceio – Penedo
Take your time and have a look around Maceió on the morning of Day 4. You can sail through the city’s canals or visit the coral reefs off the coast. Along the way you can visit Pontal da Barra, a traditional fisherman’s area and try some grilled fresh fish at one of the street stalls. Afterwards travel on to Penedo; a city by the sea where you’ll stay for the night.
Penedo – Aracaju
Today you’ll start off early for a drive along the Coconut Highway to one of the most enjoyable stops of this self drive trip! You’ll arrive in Aracaju around lunch time so that you can stop off for a bite to eat at the Colina Santo Antonio. While you’re here you’ll enjoy the panoramic view of the city and the Sergipe River. In the afternoon you’ll have time to look around Aracaju, there are several parks you can visit in the centre of the city.
Aracaju - Praia do Forte
Coming from Aracaju you’ll drive along the coast of Imbassai to Praia do Forte. This small fishing village has grown into a small-scale tourist destination. You’ll stay at a pousada in the centre of town which is made up of a ‘boulevard’ with several souvenir shops, restaurants and bars. Praia do Forte is a great place to do some relaxing on the beach. However, while in town you may also want to visit the local castle, lighthouse or the TAMAR sea turtle project.
Praia do Forte – Salvador
It’s about a 1 hour drive from Praia do Forte to Salvador airport. When you arrive you’ll drop off your car before continuing on to your next destination or hotel in Salvador.
