You'll walk through pine and rhododendron forests, open hillsides and traditional Sherpa villages, with prayer flags fluttering and yaks grazing along the trail. The early morning climb to Pikey Peak is the standout moment: as the sun rises a vast mountain panorama appears including a snow-capped Everest.

It's a compact trek that packs in culture, scenery and seriously impressive mountain views, and is easily incorporated into an itinerary from Kathmandu.

Day 1 – Drive from Kathmandu to Dhap Bazaar

    Duration: approx. 7-8 hours drive
    Altitude 1,400m

After breakfast, leave the bustle of Kathmandu behind and head east towards Dhap Bazaar. Much of the drive follows the Sun Koshi River, winding through rolling hills, rhododendron forests, and rural villages that offer a glimpse of everyday life in eastern Nepal. Dhap is a peaceful hillside settlement in the lower Solu region and the starting point of the Pikey Peak trek.

Day 2 – Trek from Dhap to Jhapre

    Duration: approx. 4-5 hours trekking
    Altitude 2,400m

Your first day on foot leads through open meadows and pine and rhododendron forests. On clear days, you may glimpse Numbur Himal and even distant Everest. Prayer flags, chortens, and grazing yaks line the peaceful trail before you arrive in Jhapre, a welcoming Sherpa village known for its mountain views.

Day 3 – Trek from Jhapre to Lhamuje

    Duration: approx. 5-6 hours trekking
    Altitude 3,200m

Today’s trail climbs gently through oak and rhododendron forest, passing stone houses, mani walls, and small settlements. As you gain height, the path opens into pastureland where yaks graze. Lhamuje sits among forested hills and offers expansive views of surrounding valleys and peaks.

Day 4 – Trek from Lhamuje to Pikey Peak Base Camp

    Duration: approx. 5-6 hours trekking
    Altitude 3,400m

Walking through traditional Sherpa villages and terraced fields, you gradually ascend into alpine meadows and grassy ridges dotted with boulders and wildflowers. Prayer flags mark the trail as panoramic views begin to unfold. The approach to base camp is both scenic and rewarding, with Pikey Peak rising ahead.

Day 5 – Hike to Pikey Peak summit, then trek to Junbesi

    Duration: approx. 7-8 hours trekking
Altitude 2,600m (plus summit of Pikey Peak at 4,040m)

Today you’ll set off before dawn to reach the summit of Pikey Peak for sunrise. The trail climbs steadily along grassy ridges and yak pastures for around 1.5 – 2 hours. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping mountain panoramas. You can see Mount Everest and a chain of other giants stretching across the horizon. After taking in the views, descend through forested slopes and quiet villages to Junbesi, a charming mountain town where you can rest after a rewarding day.

Day 6 – Visit Thupten Chholing Monastery & trek to Phaplu

    Duration: approx. 4-5 hours trekking
    Altitude 2,500m

Begin the day with a visit to Thupten Chholing Monastery, an important spiritual centre in the region. Afterwards, continue along rural trails through small villages, terraced farmland, and open countryside before reaching Phaplu, a quiet town and gateway to the surrounding mountains.

Day 6 – Drive from Phaplu to Kathmandu

    Duration: approx. 7-8 hours drive
    Altitude 1,400m

Your journey ends with a scenic drive back to Kathmandu via Khurkot. Following river valleys and winding mountain roads, you descend from the Solu Khumbu region to the capital, bringing your Himalayan trek to a close.
