Walking in Waterberg
Bite-sized trip
Day 1 – Arrival in Otjiwarongo
Today you’ll travel to the pleasant town of Otjiwarongo, which is the base from which to explore the Waterberg Plateau National Park. You’ll stay overnight in a charming B&B, with a pool, in the centre of town. Waterberg is an area of vast savannah and lush vegetation, dominated by a huge sandstone plateau, and home to unique flora and fauna. Tomorrow you’ll have the chance to head into the park and explore on foot.
Day 2 – Hiking in Waterberg Plateau National Park
This morning, lace up your walking boots for a morning of trekking in the Waterberg Plateau National Park. Drive to the entrance of the park (around 1 hour away), pay your entrance fee and you’ll be given a map and some route suggestions. There are marked walking trails you can follow through the open grasslands and lush woodlands. The park is home to over 200 species of birdlife, and you may see giraffe and gemsbok. There is also the option to book a game drive at the reception. In addition to giraffes, gemsbok, leopards and rhinos, this is one of the few places in Namibia where buffalo also live.
In the afternoon, it’s time to move on to your next destination. If you’re travelling to Windhoek, it’s a drive of around 3 hours, passing the old missionary town of Okahandja – a great place to stop.
