Protecting the Environment

If the great Sir David Attenborough has taught us anything at all, it’s that we need to cherish the natural world. And in a place like Canada, with natural wonders around every corner, isn’t it even more important that we do our bit? If you’re ready to be an eco-warrior, here are a few things you can do to help protect the environment in Canada.

Environmental threats

As one of the largest Arctic countries in the world, the melting of the polar ice caps in Canada has had a massive impact on the environment, as it makes way for oil drilling opportunities. On top of this, logging and clear-cutting of forests are still rife in some areas of the country, including Vancouver Island.

But there are plenty of things that we, as travellers, can do to protect the environment and embrace meaningful travel in Canada.

Keep an eye on your consumption

While holidays are all about indulging in new experiences, we all have a responsibility to keep our consumption and waste to a minimum, and consider how we are using natural and man-made resources. Just think- do you really need that extra carrier bag? Can you swap single-use plastics for your own nifty water bottle? Is that long hot shower totally necessary? And can you live without the air-con turned up to max? Remember, small changes can make a big difference.

Leave no man (made item) behind

“Quick, grab the camera- there’s a crisp packet floating downstream!” Said, no person ever. It’s a fact; no photo was ever improved by the presence of human waste. Worse still, rubbish- like single-use plastics- are just plain bad for the environment and wildlife; whether they become the meal of an unsuspecting humpback whale, or pollute rivers. Remember that famous (and slightly cheesy) saying, “take only memories, leave only footprints.” You get the idea…
