Day 1 – Arrival at Shkodra

Today the road will take you to one of the oldest cities in Europe, sat on the banks of a picturesque lake with the same name. Tucked in the north of the country, Shkodra is packed with character and makes a perfect stopover on your way to the Albanian Alps. The ambient old town with colourful buildings and cobbled streets is lined with inviting cafes and boutiques. The medieval Rozafa castle overlooking the city offers magnificent views of the lake. And there’s the iconic Ottoman bridge too (among other attractions), worth a walk over, even if just for a photo.

In Shkodra we’ve found a small boutique hotel in the old town, with heaps of Italian flair (not uncommon for Shkodra) and an inviting courtyard. This will be your home for the next few days, with the pretty city at your doorsteps waiting to be explored.

Day 2 – Day trip to lake Koman

We’re sure you’ve got at least a glimpse of the vast lake Shkodra by now, so today you’ll venture off to another body of water, lake Koman, man-made but oh-so-pretty. Built in the late 70s, this reservoir was created to regulate the water levels of the river Drin, serving as a dam. Now its mirror-like surface, turquoise water and forest-clad mountains surrounding the lake have turned it into one of the main attractions in the area.

You will explore the lake by boat before kayaking down the clear Shala river, surrounded by the huge rock formations and deep gorges of Valbona Valley. To help you refuel after all the paddling and excitement, a hearty lunch will be served at one of the local guest houses before you return back to Koman (the starting point) by boat. We haven’t planned anything else for the day, leaving your afternoon free to do as you please.

Day 3 – Leaving Shkodra

Today your time in charming Shkodra comes to an end. Enjoy your morning coffee with a view or stroll down the lake’s bank one last time before jumping in your car and heading towards your next adventure.
